Kusserow was a native of Pennsylvania. Until 1974 he worked as a commercial artist in Denver and before that he was a biological illustrator for the University of Colorado. His interest in illustrating wildlife, particularly birds, prompted him to move to Presho and establish a studio which he called Studio at the Barn.
In 1976, Kusserow's painting of a pair of mallards was selected as the winner of the first South Dakota Migratory Bird Stamp contest. In 1977, the South Dakota Pheasant Congress selected his Swinson's Farm - Ringneck Pheasant for the 1978 South Dakota Pheasant Restoration Stamp. Among other awards, his 1985 Canada Goose was selected as Wyoming's 1st of State Conservation Stamp.
Robert Kusserow's acrylic paintings are noted for their characteristic attention to detail. He is recognized as one of the country's foremost modern wildlife artists.
